Single flowers have between 5 and 10 petals, although some experts include plants with 13 petals. They are arranged around a centre of carpels and pollen- bearing stamens. In the first few days of flowering, single peonies close up at night to protect the pollen, thereby prolonging the life of the flower. They need no staking.
