Like all black iris flowers, this is not actually 'black' but in certain lights the wonderful, shiny blooms look black. The darkest black-purple standards are extravagantly ruffled. The falls, which are smooth and velvety are darker still. On these sit very dark blue beards.

Bearded irises need to be planted with the rhizome, or root, just above the soil. This is because the rhizome needs to be baked by the sun in order to form flowers. Make sure that there is not too much competition from surrounding plants and remove any weeds.
