Tall stems carry large white flowers that are heavily stained around the edges with blue and paling softer blue as they open. The flowers have large upper petals shaped like hoods, hence its common name 'Monkshood'. At the base is a large mound of deep green leaves. Gives the appearance of a short delphinium.
