Polygonatum falcatum 'Variegatum'

Hardy to -10 degrees and more. The leaves die off in autumn and emerge from the base again in spring. Cut back old leaf stems in spring before the new leaves grow. Slow to establish, but once it has, will last for many years. Sometimes the leaves are eaten vigorously by a small grey larvae that leaves the stems entirely nude. This is Solomon's seal sawfly. I do not spray these little grubs, but knock them off the plant using a pair of gloves and a bowl to catch them - like Lily beetle they tend to drop quickly. The plant may become defaced, but it is undamaged and will come back next year. Requires a shady spot, and soil that retains some moisture.
