Opening from dark red buds into tiny, rich red flowers the flowers eventually form long, fat spikes which are carried on slender stems not far above a dense, round mound of oval, mid-green leaves. A hardy perennial, which means it comes back year after year, is hardy to -10 or more but may, like many perennials, take a year or so to establish its final size. The leaves die back in winter leaving a brown heap that will provide cover for over-wintering insects. Remove the dead foliage in spring before new leaves emerge.
A hardy perennials, this survives temperatures down to -10 degrees and more. The foliage dies back in autumn and emerges in later in spring than a lot of other perennials. This will seed around in moist soils. In dry soil, it can fail to thrive.
