Peony 'Sonoma Halo'

Very few Intersectional peonies have double flowers, but this one does. The primrose yellow blooms produce a low domed powder puff full of fringed petals. Right in the centre the red base to the petals is just about visible. Despite being double the flowers do not hang downwards because the red flower stems are short and strong. Each opens from a handsome red edged bud above a dense mound of big, dark green, leathery leaves.

They require a sunny or partial shade in well-drained soil. Plant Intersectional peonies so that the roots are covered up to where the branching begins. Do not mix manure in the soil before planting as this may rot the eyes. This is an intersectional peony, which is a cross between a woody-stemmed tree peony and an herbaceous peony that dies back in autumn. The woody growth can be cut back during the winter.
