Peony 'Lafayette Escadrille'

(Paeonia 'Lafayette Escadrille')

This is one of the first Intersectional peonies I grew over 20 years ago, and it impressed me then. The rich red flowers are very single with a ring of golden stamens sitting around the centre or red tipped carpels. The flowers are held just above the handsome, rich green flowers on short stems. This is thought to be a hybrid between P. Lactiflora and a lutea tree peony hybrid, possibly Peony 'Thunderbolt'.

They require a sunny or partial shade in well-drained soil. Plant Intersectional peonies so that the roots are covered up to where the branching begins. Do not mix manure in the soil before planting as this may rot the eyes. This is an intersectional peony, which is a cross between a woody-stemmed tree peony and an herbaceous peony that dies back in autumn. The woody growth can be cut back during the winter.
