Monarda 'Fireball'
(Bergamot, Bee balm)
The whorls of wine-red, hooded flowers are borne all the way up the stiff stems, above scented, mid-green leaves. The flowers sit in purple bracts that give it a nice two-tone effect. It grows into a neat, upright plant.

Upright plant
Hardy to -10 degrees and much more, the foliage dies back in autumn and emerges again in spring. Cut back the old stems before the new leaves start to grow. Like many Monardas this does best in a soil that does not dry out. In warm, moist summers - which in the case of the UK is most of the time - the leaves may be covered in mildew. This will not harm the plant, but can look unsightly.
