Cosmos atrosanguinea

Just when you think that this has succumbed to cold winter weather, this begins in early summer to sprout deep green, spatula shaped leaves. Long, maroon stems of small, very dark maroon flowers are produced for weeks. These resemble velvety, miniature dahlias and are intriguingly scented of chocolate. A unique little plant, it forms low, round mounds and blends well with silver-leaved plants. A native of Mexico which, although perennial, can be tender in colder areas of the country.
